Walk C

WALK C: THE RIVER BANK

From the centre of Papcastle, walking towards Cockermouth, turn right at the crossroad where Dover’s Lane comes from the left, onto the “Back Lane”.  In front of you is a farm gate, giving onto a track down to the river.  Once through the gate at the bottom, the path follows the river bank throughout until it meets the Broughton Beck path (Walk B).  This offers a return route, or one may continue along the river bank to Broughton High Bridge.

Details of continuation here and also of other walks from Cockermouth, outside our parish may be found in Bradbury’s “Walks from Cockermouth”, 2003; this may be purchased from the New Bookshop or the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall)

Further instructions are not really necessary – just keep going.  The path is firm underfoot, except possibly where trodden by cattle at the gate which allows you under the new Papcastle Bridge over the Derwent. There is a steep climb further along where the path needs care in wet weather.
